laughter and family bond

Zuri Bell stepped onto the little stage with his mother. The microphone squealed. Zuri jumped and blurted, “That mic just told a joke first!” A baby giggled, and Zuri grinned up at his mother in the bright light.

He read the first joke from an index card. The room stayed quiet. Only the speaker buzzed, and someone coughed in the back. Zuri looked at the card, then at his mother. “Maybe that joke wants to go home,” he said softly.

His mother tried a joke next. Clunk! A dropped spoon rang on a paper plate. Zuri gave a tiny shrug. His mother leaned close. Under the smell of popcorn, they whispered, “What makes us laugh at home?”

Zuri tapped the mic stand like a drum. Then he told about the time he burned the toast so badly, the smoke alarm sounded like it wanted breakfast too. A snort popped out in the crowd. Then came a bigger laugh. His mother jumped in with the part about fanning the kitchen with a pizza box.

While he acted out the pizza-box fanning, Zuri slipped and spun in a wobbly circle. His mother caught the box and fanned him like a king on purpose. The crowd burst out laughing. Zuri laughed so hard he could barely say, “Yep—keep that in the show!”

They finished side by side, trading quick home stories and silly sounds until the whole room clapped along. After the show, Zuri bumped shoulders with his mother behind the curtain. Happy laughter still floated after them. They carried the pizza box home like a prize.
