At midnight, moonlight slid across the rug. A tiny drum went tap-tap-tap beside the bed.

The young child opened one eye and stayed very still under the blanket.

Silver light shone on the toys. They were starting to wiggle.

The blanket came up higher. The stuffed bear balanced on a block.

The toy train chugged in a circle, and the doll cartwheeled across the rug like a circus star.

Tumblewick bit back a giggle as the pale blue floor glowed and the tiny drum pattered faster.

Then the toys stacked books into a tall tower and turned the jump rope into a tightrope.

"Whoa," whispered Tumblewick, as the rope swayed and a clown horn gave a silly honk.

Suddenly, the top book slipped. The tower tipped. Everything crashed down in a noisy clatter.

But then the train nudged the books back. The bear caught the doll. The whole tiny circus ended with a bow.

Tumblewick laughed into the pillow.

In the morning, the room was bright and still.

The young child climbed out of bed and found the toys resting neatly on the rug.

Tumblewick smiled, smoothed the rug with one hand, and felt the room sparkle with a secret.
