Moonlight slipped into the busy kitchen in a long silver stripe. A favorite toy gave a tiny blink, a stretchy wiggle, and whispered, “Come on, let’s explore.”
The toy scooted away between chair legs and crinkly grocery bags. Riley padded after it, thinking, I want to see where this goes.
Then the toy zipped under the table just as the table gave a rattly, noisy shake. Riley stopped short, thinking, That sounds big.
For one tiny moment, Riley almost turned back. But the toy peeked out again, and Riley took one more careful step.
The toy led the way toward the counter’s dark edge and the glowing window beyond. Riley looked up and whispered, “Too high.”
The toy bounced back and tapped the dish towel hanging down like a rope. Riley stared at it, thinking, Maybe I can do that.
Slowly, carefully, Riley climbed. At the top, Riley reached the windowsill and held a small proud smile.
At the window, the city lights looked like a sparkling pretend kingdom. Riley and the toy raced along the sill, fast and light.
Headlights flashed on the street below, and Riley ducked behind the plant pot with the toy. Riley thought, We’re hidden in the castle now.
When the kitchen grew quiet again, the toy curled still in Riley’s paws. Riley nestled beside it and murmured, “Let’s go again tomorrow night.”
