Bramble dropped his favorite pinecone onto the stone cave floor with a loud clatter. "I miss Grandma," he whispered to the empty room. He squinted out across the wide, hazy green valley where she lived.
He grabbed a crisp sheet of paper and a handful of squishy blackberries. Pressing the berries down, he drew two happy bears. A sticky, sweet smell filled the breezy cave as he worked.
Bramble folded the sticky paper into an airplane. He stepped out to the edge of the towering pines and threw it with a mighty grunt. It nosedived straight into a prickly bush. Bramble scowled and kicked a loose pebble.
"Fly to Grandma!" Bramble yelled, throwing the plane much harder this time. A sudden squawk startled him as a blue jay swooped underneath. The tiny plane dipped, wobbled, and caught a strong gust of wind.
Bramble watched the white speck sail higher and higher until it disappeared into the clouds. He sat alone on the cold stone edge, resting his chin on his paws. The pine forest grew completely quiet.
Suddenly, a warm, sweet-smelling breeze swept up the cliff and wrapped gently around Bramble. He lifted his head and smiled a huge, toothy grin. "Hi, Grandma," he said to the wind.
