Aadyashri peeled back her birthday blanket and gasped. A giant spiraled conch shell rested on her pillow, its surface shimmering with salt-crystal sparkles.
She lifted it to her ear and heard a voice whisper, "Happy 7th birthday, Aadyashri — follow the sound." She dropped the shell, picked it up again, and the whispering grew louder, tugging her toward the window.
Aadyashri sprinted barefoot down the driveway, the conch still murmuring in her hands, and skidded to a halt at the edge of the beach. A bright blue catamaran waited, its sails painted with suns and starfish.
A captain in a straw hat tipped his brim and held out a hand. "For the birthday girl," he said. Aadyashri slipped the shell into her pocket, took his hand, and climbed aboard as seagulls cried overhead.
Inside the conch, pressed flat against the spiral, Aadyashri found a hand-drawn map showing a winding route to a secret cove, complete with a crossed-out patch marked 'Mystery.'
She traced the path with her finger as the boat cut through turquoise water, and the captain pointed ahead — a small yellow kayak was tied to the stern, waiting.
Aadyashri untied the kayak, pushed off, and paddled toward the marked cove as the catamaran disappeared behind a wall of pink bougainvillea.
Aadyashri drifted into a hidden cove, pulled the kayak onto white sand, and dug beneath a driftwood log until her fingers bumped something hard — a wooden chest stamped with a golden 'A.'
She pried the lid open; inside, wrapped in oilcloth, lay a pair of oversized coral-red sunglasses and a folded note that read, 'Put these on.' She pulled the sunglasses over her eyes, and the world flooded with shimmering pink and gold light.
Aadyashri stood on the beach in her luminous sunglasses and gasped — every grain of sand glowed like tiny scattered stars, and the ocean rippled with ribbons of liquid gold.
A school of neon-blue fish leaped from the surf in perfect arcs, splashing over her head, and she laughed, kicking off her shoes and sprinting toward the warm water.
Aadyashri dove into the Caribbean, the glowing waves closing around her, and swam forward into a birthday that had no end.
