The science fair glows under bright classroom lights. Paper models and glass jars cover every table. At one end, a tall volcano stands ready and quiet.
Agnes mixes the powder and vinegar in a bowl. She pours the fizzing mix into the top of her volcano. Bubbles crawl over the sides.
She adds the final powder. The volcano huffs once, twice — and stops. Agnes stares at the flat, quiet top.
Agnes stirs the mixture again, harder this time. She tips the bowl fast. Red lava spills over the edges and floods the table.
"Whoa!" Agnes jumps back. The red lava keeps flowing, bright and slippery, all over the table.
The lava keeps flowing. It spills down the sides of the volcano and gathers in a glowing red pool around the base.
Agnes looks at the red puddle. A grin spreads across her face. "It's like a real eruption!"
Agnes stands beside her volcano, arms crossed, beaming. The red lava shines like a real river of fire.
