Agustin sat astride his chestnut horse at the edge of the grassy arena. The colorful jumps gleamed under the morning sun. The crowd's murmur faded as he gripped the reins. "Let's go," he whispered. His horse nudged forward — then a shadow swooped between them.

Arnaldo's horse slammed between them, cutting off the first jump. Agustin reined hard. His horse snorted and tossed its head. With a sharp turn that sent a spray of grass into the air, Agustin steered around the obstacle and kept moving.

Agustin approached the second set of obstacles, counting his strides. His horse's hooves drummed a steady rhythm on the packed dirt. He leaned forward, ready to launch — but Arnaldo swerved across the path again.

Arnaldo's horse nearly clipped the orange jump. The wooden barrier clattered loudly to the ground. Agustin's grip tightened on the reins. "Easy, boy," he whispered, forcing his horse to slow.

On the final jump, Agustin urged his horse faster. The wind whipped past his ears and the crowd's voices rose into a roar. But Arnaldo's horse pulled up right in front of him — blocking the path entirely.

A small girl in the stands gasped so loudly it echoed across the arena. Agustin's jaw set. His horse stamped once in frustration. He closed his eyes for one breath — hay, horse sweat, and something else. Something he had not felt in a long time.

Agustin opened his eyes. He guided his horse toward a narrow gap between two jumps — a gap they had never practiced. The crowd fell completely silent. Then his horse leaped.

The horse soared through the opening and landed perfectly on the other side. For a moment nobody moved. Then the arena erupted into cheers. Agustin threw his arms up and laughed out loud.

Agustin rode slowly around the arena, the sun warm on his neck. The grass brushed against the toes of his boots. He had done it. He had found the gap — and he had jumped it.

Agustin caught Arnaldo watching from the fence line. The teenage boy gave a single, almost imperceptible nod. Agustin raised his hand back. Without a word, he knew. He had finally found what winning felt like.
