family bonding through riding

Agustin buckled his saddle tight and slung two more over his shoulders. He marched toward the stable, arms heavy but his chin held high. His parents stepped out into the golden sunlight.

He held the stirrup steady for his mom. She gripped the reins, teetered, then burst out laughing when the horse sneezed right in her face. The bridle bells jingled happily.

They trotted into the meadow. Tall grass whispered against the horses' legs. Agustin rode ahead calling directions over his shoulder, while his mom nearly tipped into clover.

His mom wobbled with delight. His dad sat perfectly still, one hand resting easy on the saddle horn, a proud smile cracking his weathered face.

Agustin pulled his horse to a stop. He listened to the church bell toll once, twice. The warm wind carried the sweet scent of cut grass. He realized he did not need to win.

He rode back alongside his mom and pulled his dad into a three-way hug right there in the meadow. Their horses stamped and snorted around them.

The sun dipped low and painted everything gold. His mom's arm was around his shoulders. His dad's hand squeezed his knee through the saddle.

They all sat together in the grass as their horses grazed peacefully. Agustin looked at his parents and smiled. The real prize had been right there all along.

The horses chewed lazily, tails swishing. The church bell tolled once more in the distance. Agustin rested his head against his mom's shoulder and closed his eyes.

The meadow grew quiet. Fireflies blinked awake among the wildflowers. Agustin knew he would never forget this ride — not the racing, not the wobbles, but the sitting together in the golden grass.
