finding self-worth

Aisha walked along the dusty path behind her house, head down. Cart wheels rolled past, market calls rang out, and laughter floated on the wind — but no one said her name.

She slipped into the tall grass and spotted something small and brown and folded in the dirt — a dead-looking bud. She knelt and touched it with her fingertip.

The bud cracked open. A soft golden glow spilled out — warm and sweet like honey — and the petals unfurled into a pale blue flower. Aisha's breath caught.

At the market, she held up a silver-painted pebble toward a passing baker. He didn't glance down — he stepped around her and kept walking.

She showed a moss-covered stone to a woman hanging laundry. The woman draped her cloth over Aisha's outstretched hand without even noticing. She walked home alone.

Behind her house, Aisha found a patch of cracked dry earth where nothing had grown all season. She placed her palm flat against the soil and hummed a quiet tune.

The ground shivered. Bright yellow wildflowers popped open one after another like a secret being told. Aisha giggled, but the wind swallowed her sound.

The next morning, her little sister ran into the flower patch and dropped her favorite wooden doll into a thorn bush, sobbing.

Aisha gathered the wilting blue flower she had saved and pressed it against the doll's cracked face. The flower glowed bright gold.

The doll's wooden eyes blinked open. Her sister stopped crying and stared.

Soon the whole village was there — pointing at the flowers, the pebbles, the glowing patches of grass. All the things Aisha had shown them before were finally seen.

Aisha stood in the middle of the glowing field and smiled. For the first time, everyone saw her.
