Alexa sprinted through the stadium doors. A basketball tucked under one arm, a thick textbook against her chest. She scanned the program. Her eyes landed on her name.
Alexa stepped into the aisle. The basketball rolled from her grip. It bounced once, twice, then settled near a row of sleeping freshmen. One opened an eye and giggled.
Alexa reached her seat and stood on tiptoes. The stage was blocked by a towering banner. She held her breath, then sighed as it flapped. A draft from the vents ruffled her hair.
The principal's voice boomed: 'And the Outstanding Student-Athlete award goes to... Alexa!' Her eyes widened. A smile broke across her face.
Alexa stepped into the aisle. Her sneakers squeaked on the floor. A spotlight found her face as she walked toward the stage.
She reached the stage. The principal handed her the trophy. It gleamed under the lights.
Alexa took the trophy. The metal was cool and smooth. She looked down at her basketball and textbook, resting together on the chair behind her.
A tiny rainbow danced on the bleachers. She looked at the trophy, then at her things. Both. She had managed both.
Alexa sat on the bleachers with the trophy beside her. The basketball and textbook rested at her feet. She traced the edge of the trophy with her thumb.
'Both,' she whispered. The stadium cheered. Alexa held the trophy close.
