The zoo stretched wide and warm under a bright blue sky. Anastasia unrolled her crinkly map and marched past the ticket booth, her white sneakers slapping against the pavement. A sudden gust of wind flipped the map to a fresh page marked with a wiggly arrow. She caught it just in time and grinned.
The wiggly arrow pointed straight at the primate house. Anastasia clutched the map and followed the curvy line through the crowd. Pushing through the swinging doors, she stepped into the shaded jungle room. Soft chittering sounds drifted from behind the glass. 'I found you,' she thought, her eyes scanning the branches above.
Clumps of monkeys swung from rope bridges overhead. A massive gorilla sat motionless on a rocky ledge, watching her with slow, thoughtful eyes. The air smelled of damp earth and fresh bamboo. Anastasia crept along the viewing path, her sneakers silent on the wooden floor. She checked the map again.
Then she saw it — a red panda tapping its nose against the glass. Anastasia pressed her palm to the window and wiggled her fingers. The red panda chirped and copied her hand motion perfectly. 'You can wiggle too?' she thought, giggling as it chattered back with bright, curious eyes.
The map in her hand felt warm and different. The wiggly arrow had become a little paw print, pointing toward the ocean house. A smile spread across her face as she folded the map carefully. 'The journey isn't over,' she thought, stepping back into the sunny afternoon with a skip in her step.
The path wound past colorful flower beds and shady groves. Children laughed and ice cream vendors called out in the distance. Anastasia followed the paw print, her pace steady and sure. Through the trees, a glass-domed building shimmered in the sunlight. 'The ocean house,' she thought, adjusting her grip on the map.
Before she reached the building, the map began to tremble. A low hum vibrated through the paper, rattling her teeth. 'Hello?' she whispered to the restless map. It spun around in her hands, flapping its corners like excited wings. A puff of cold, salty air drifted from somewhere nearby.
Inside, the air was cool and carried the sharp scent of frozen fish and seaweed. Water sparkled in pools and fountains under soft blue lighting. A sea otter floated on its back in the center pool, holding out a smooth, wet clam shell. Anastasia leaned closer, her eyes wide with wonder.
Anastasia reached out and took the shell. It was warm in her palm, almost pulsing gently. The otter clacked its teeth happily and splashed cold water that sparkled in the overhead light. When she looked down, a tiny picture of a secret garden appeared on the inside of the shell.
The shell's picture led her to a quiet corner bench. A meerkat stood on its hind legs, wearing a tiny backpack. She opened it to find shiny stones and a crayon drawing of herself. The meerkat bowed low as Anastasia sat down and offered half her sandwich. The zoo glowed gold in the fading light.
