Andin pedaled her bicycle down the winding dirt path. Golden terraced rice fields rose on every side. She rode toward the green slopes where Pak Darma worked each morning.

Andin hopped off her bicycle. Pak Darma's weathered hands moved between the young shoots, pulling weeds from the warm mud. He looked up, his eyes crinkling, and beckoned her closer.

Pak Darma led her to a narrow irrigation channel. Tiny silver fish darted between the rice roots, nibbling insects. Andin crouched low, watching the fish swim past her fingers.

Pak Darma held out a bamboo scoop. 'Would you like to catch one?' he asked. Andin nodded and dipped the scoop into the cool current. A tiny fish flashed silver inside the net.

The next morning, Andin walked through the village. Women sat on low stools weaving pandanus leaves into mats. Their fingers moved in a steady rhythm over the fibrous strands.

One woman held up a mat finished with rice stalks and fish. 'Every pattern tells a story,' she said. Andin ran her fingers over the ridges of the woven leaves.

At the communal field, villagers formed a long chain. They passed baskets of seedlings from hand to hand, moving in a line toward the wet earth. 'Ready?' called Pak Darma.

A monkey swooped down from a nearby tree. It snatched a seedling and perched on a branch, chattering while dangling the green shoot between its toes. The villagers laughed.

'Hey you, thief!' Pak Darma called up in a teasing voice. He held out a piece of banana. The monkey paused, considered the offer, and dropped the seedling back into the basket.

That evening, Andin sat by the rice field. The monkey rested on her bicycle handlebars, full and sleepy. Pak Darma and the children gathered around her woven mat.

Andin unrolled the mat and traced the patterns with her finger. The golden light washed over the terraces. 'This is the story of our field,' she thought. 'I will come back.'

Andin smiled as the last light touched the green terraces. The village would be here when she returned. Next season, she would help plant the next crop.
