Anna carried her lunch tray into the noisy cafeteria. One table stood empty near the sunny windows.
She sat down and looked at her sandwich. Clatter-clatter went trays all around her.
At her quiet table, Anna took one tiny bite of apple. Crunch!
A girl came over with a wobbly milk carton. “Can I sit here?” she asked.
Anna looked at the empty chair, then smiled. “Yes, please.”
The tray landed—SPLAT! Peas bounced across the table like little green balls.
They talked about favorite things. Ding-ding! The lunch bell rang.
Their trays rested side by side at the return window. They walked out together, laughing.
