identity, faith, and mercy

Yunus dropped his toy sailboat into the soft sand and looked up at his father. "Why am I named after the man the whale swallowed?" he asked, tugging his father's sleeve. The waves tickled his ankles as golden light spread across the beach.

His father sat him on a smooth shell-strewn dune and pointed toward the water. A giant shape moved beneath the surface. "He was not being punished," his father said, scooping warm sand through his fingers. "He was learning something about patience."

His father covered Yunus's eyes with both hands. "Imagine: dark water all around you, no sky, no ground, only the sound of your own breathing." Yunus pressed his lips together and counted to three in the dark.

Yunus counted to three in the blackness. One. Two. Three. When his father's hands opened, light poured in.

Through his father's parted fingers, Yunus saw the whale break the surface — a wide blowhole spraying shimmering droplets that caught the sunset like scattered coins.

A tiny silver fish hopped onto the sand between Yunus's toes and flopped once, twice before splashing back into the surf.

Yunus stood up slowly and called toward the whale, voice small but clear: "My Lord, I will never stop asking for Your mercy."

The whale let out a low hum that vibrated through the air, and his father squeezed his shoulder.

Yunus walked to the water's edge and gently pushed his toy sailboat into a wave. It bobbed forward toward the distant whale.

"Allah loves people who ask," he told the ocean, and the boat sailed on as the sun dipped below the horizon.

The waves continued their quiet rhythm against the sand, and somewhere far out, the whale sang.

Yunus walked back to his father's side, his hand finding his father's. The toy sailboat sailed on, carried by the tide.
