The sunlit garden stretched wide and warm, wildflowers swaying in a gentle breeze. Barnaby stood at the edge of the path, ears perked and nose twitching.
A flash of blue fluttered through the wildflowers. Barnaby's eyes widened — a butterfly, its wings catching the sun like stained glass. He leaped after it, paws kicking up a spray of dirt.
Barnaby slowed near the wooden fence, panting. A busy bee zipped past his nose. 'What is that fluttering thing?' he thought. The bee circled frantically and left a dusting of yellow pollen on his nose.
Barnaby blinked the pollen away and scampered on, following the blue butterfly toward a quiet lily pad pond. A plump green frog perched on a stone and croaked, 'Ribbit! Is it a flying leaf?'
Barnaby tilted his head, the frog's croak bouncing off the water. He kept trotting along the winding path, the blue butterfly darting above a sea of wildflowers.
Barnaby finally caught up — but the butterfly didn't land on a flower. It settled gently on the back of an old turtle basking on a warm rock by the path.
The turtle blinked slowly and whispered, 'Butterflies are painted flowers that learned to fly.' Barnaby's ears perked up, his nose twitching at the scent of damp earth and old shell.
Barnaby sat down beside the turtle and watched the blue butterfly lift off again, drifting higher over the meadow. The garden seemed to hold its breath.
The sun pressed warm against Barnaby's fur. His tail gave one last happy thump against the grass as he watched the butterfly dance above the wildflowers.
Barnaby had discovered something wonderful. The butterfly drifted over the meadow, and the garden felt brighter than ever before.
