Barnaby waited by the trickling creek, holding two perfectly folded oak leaf sailboats in his paws. A sudden rustle of bushes made him look up, just as his old friend sprinted past, heavily chasing a rolling pinecone with a loud badger. Barnaby let one of his boats slide quietly onto the damp moss. He thought the game of chase looked awfully fast, and maybe a little too chaotic for sailboats.
The laughter echoed behind him as he dragged his tail through the dry, crunchy autumn leaves. He stopped at the very edge of the tall, whispering pines. Shadows stretched long and dark across a patch of forest he had never visited alone. Taking a slow, careful breath, he stepped over a fallen birch log.
Plop! A giant, neon-green caterpillar dropped out of a red maple tree and landed perfectly on his nose. Barnaby crossed his eyes, trying to focus on the fuzzy, wiggling bug. A quick giggle leaped out of his mouth. The caterpillar squiggled down to the dirt and pointed its tiny round head toward a sparkling blue puddle.
He crouched down to float his last oak leaf sailboat in the clear rainwater. The cool autumn wind puffed across the surface, sending the little ship spinning. Plink! A small frog broke the surface, creating silver ripples that bumped against the boat. Barnaby tilted his head and gently pushed a long pine needle toward the swimmer.
The small frog snatched the pine needle, hopped aboard the tiny ship, and croaked a loud, cheerful "Ahoy!" Barnaby jumped backward, his paws clapping together in mid-air. His ears shot straight up into points. He grinned with all his teeth, absolutely eager to see where their strange little vessel would sail next.
Barnaby raced alongside the winding creek, chasing the bouncing vessel while the small frog steered. When he spotted his old friend and the loud badger watching from the far bank, he waved a joyous paw. Then he skipped quickly ahead to follow his tiny green captain. The bright autumn sun painted the forest gold as they charted a course straight for the distant waterfall.
