gentle, curious, cheerful

sharing and togetherness on the farm

Bess stood by the wooden fence and watched the green pasture stretch wide and bright. Across the field, three cows talked in a low murmur. She stepped forward, hooves clicking softly, but their laughter rose too loud and she paused.

A pale yellow butterfly drifted past Bess's nose. She followed it with her eyes, then turned back toward the other cows. Her feet moved again, but the sound of their laughter bumped into her and she stopped.

A thin calf waddled over and dropped a sprig of sweet clover at Bess's hooves. She nudged it gently back toward him. The calf backed away, ears flicking, and trotted off to his herd.

A breeze carried the smell of warm hay across the field. Bess lowered her head and let her ears droop. She did not move. She did not call out. She just stood there by the fence.

Bess trotted past the barn toward the far pasture. A low moan drifted through the air, thin and shaky. She quickened her pace and pushed through a line of tall weeds.

An elder cow stood trapped, a thick bramble tangled tight around her foreleg. Her eyes were wide with worry. Bess stepped close and pressed her shoulder against the thorny vine.

Bess pulled with all her might. Muscles bunched in her neck and shoulders. The bramble creaked, then snapped free with a soft pop. The elder cow limped forward, free at last.

The elder cow nuzzled Bess's neck. A warm rumble of thanks vibrated between them. Then she turned and called out across the pasture, her voice strong and clear.

The chatting cows turned their heads. The calves stopped their game. The thin calf trotted over first, then the rest followed, curious and eager.

They settled into a loose circle under the barn's shadow. The elder cow stood at the center. The chatting cows formed one side. The calves gathered on another. Even the thin calf found a spot.

Golden light poured over the wooden fence, painting stripes of warmth across the grass. The cows chewed slowly and rested together. Bess looked around at all of them.

There was plenty of room. Bess stepped into the circle and stood among them, her ears perked up. She didn't feel left out anymore. She just felt... right there.
