The neighborhood grocery store hummed beneath bright ceiling lights. Bob darted ahead of Mom’s cart and reached for a shiny box of chocolate-chip cookies. “These are special!” he said, while freezer doors whispered and shopping wheels rattled behind him.
Bob tucked the box into the cart and hurried toward the cookie aisle. He thought the shiny package might be exactly right. Behind him, the cart squeaked once, then rolled steadily beneath the buzzing lights.
Chocolate cookies came first. Then frosted cookies. Then tiny sandwich cookies stacked in neat little towers. Bob placed each box in the cart, changed his mind, and placed another beside it; crinkly packages gathered like a noisy puzzle.
Bob’s grin faded. Chocolate chips looked tempting, frosting looked festive, and tiny sandwiches looked tidy. He studied the cart, then the shelf, while the packages whispered whenever he nudged them. “Which one?” he wondered aloud.
He reached for one more box. The small cookie display wobbled, tipped, and crashed sideways. One cardboard cookie rolled free—round and swift—spinning down the aisle like a wheel.
Bob chased the rolling cookie past the bakery. Warm cinnamon-scented air drifted from the ovens, but the cardboard wheel kept wobbling onward. It stopped beside a bright bunch of crunchy carrots, their green tops waving above the produce table.
Bob picked up one carrot and took a loud bite. CRUNCH! The crisp snap cut through the bakery’s soft bustle. He stared at the carrot, then took another bite, slower this time, as if listening for the sound again.
Another CRUNCH made Bob laugh. He returned the cookie boxes to their shelf, one by one, while Mom steadied the crooked display nearby. The runaway mess became orderly again, and the carrot bunch sat proudly in the cart.
At snack time, Bob washed the carrots under a sparkling kitchen tap. He lined them beside a little dipping bowl and arranged the leafy tops in a neat row. The cookie box waited farther back on the counter, quiet and unopened.
Bob took the first bite. CRUNCH! The sound bounced across the kitchen and seemed to tap every clean plate. He nudged the cookie box toward Mom and said, “The surprise choice was the best one.”
