overcoming fear through friendship

Bramble tiptoed through the dark woods. Both his paws were pressed over his eyes. His knee bumped a tree root and he stumbled backward into a pile of damp leaves.

He squeezed his eyes tighter and let out a shaky breath. Something glinted through the darkness and floated toward him.

A tiny glowing firefly drifted down and landed right on the tip of his nose. The warmth tickled. Snee-zoo! He peeked through his paws at the soft golden light.

Bramble tried to run past the firefly with his paws still covering his eyes. Every time he bumped into something, the firefly buzzed back.

He bumped a mossy rock, then a tangled vine, then a hollow log. Each time, the firefly buzzed near his ear. He lowered one paw, then the other.

Both eyes were open. The golden light bobbed ahead of him, steady and warm. He thought, Maybe I can follow that.

One tiny step forward. Then another. The firefly zipped higher and waited for him. It led him past the biggest log in the forest.

Bramble scrambled up the rough bark. His claws scraped softly. The firefly zipped above and waited on the other side.

He reached the other side and gasped. The trees opened up, and a soft silver light shimmered ahead.

Bramble stood at the edge of his clearing. His cozy burrow glowed faintly in the moonlight. The firefly circled his head twice.

The firefly settled on a blade of grass near the burrow entrance. Bramble smiled. He tiptoed inside without covering his eyes.

He glanced back once and waved at the little golden light still shining in the dark. Good night, little friend.
