Down the shelter hallway, their tails disappeared around the corner. Bramble scrambled after them — paws skittering on the cool tile — but the gate clicked shut. He sat. Ears drooping. Eyes on the door.
Bramble tried everything. He howled at the kennel door. A nurse walked by without looking. He rolled onto his back, paws in the air. A volunteer shook his cage. The sun crept across the floor, shadows growing longer and longer.
A little girl appeared at the end of the hall. She wore a red backpack and stopped right in front of Bramble's kennel. She pointed and asked the volunteer something. The volunteer nodded and opened the gate.
Bramble stepped forward. Tail giving one hopeful wag. But the girl walked past him — straight to the next kennel, where another puppy sat waiting. His tail stopped. He went very still.
She came back alone. Left her red backpack on a bench. Kneeling again, she held out her hand, palm up, right through the bars. Bramble sniffed her fingers. Then she whispered, 'Want to come home?'
Bramble's whole body trembled. And for the very first time — thump. His tail hit the floor. One thump. Then another. She scooped him up and buried her face in his fur.
Outside, the afternoon sun painted the shelter walls gold. Bramble rested his chin on her shoulder. His tail still swishing — steady, sure, never stopping.
They stepped out together into the warm sunlight. The girl carried him close. And the puppy — for the first time — did not look back.
