The sun painted the meadow gold as Bramble scuttled through the clover. Suddenly, he stopped. His quills bristled at a soft, rhythmic chirping coming from beneath a large green fern.

A tiny, downy chick lay on its side, one wing tucked awkwardly. It looked up with wide, black eyes. Bramble crouched low, his nose twitching as he smelled the damp earth and the chick’s faint, sweet milk-scent.

Bramble nudged the chick gently with his snout, but it tumbled sideways, too tired to move. He tried lifting it with his mouth, but the oak branches were too high. The chick let out a sharp, desperate peep that echoed against the sparkling brook nearby.

Spotting a tangle of willow branches, Bramble dragged a large flat leaf to use as a sled. He placed the chick on the leaf and pushed hard, sliding it across the grass until it bumped softly against the lowest hanging twig. With a careful tug, he hoisted the leaf up.

The wind caught the leaf, spinning it in a dizzying circle before dropping it near a patch of stinging nettles. Bramble gasped. He scrambled forward, his claws clicking against the bark of the ancient oak as he began to climb, the chick safe in his mouth.

Halfway up, a sudden gust rattled the branches. The chick slipped, dangling by a single claw from a hollow knot. Bramble froze, his quills bristling. He carefully hooked his spines into the bark and pulled the chick back to safety.

Bramble placed the chick into the warm nest where two parent birds waited. Their feathers were ruffled with relief. The mother bird dropped a shiny blue beetle onto Bramble’s nose. He crunched it happily, feeling the crisp shell snap.

Bramble trotted back down the tree, his belly full and his quills smooth. The forest hummed around him in the golden afternoon light. He paused at the edge of the clover, listening to the quiet, happy chirps from above.
