Buckie tumbled onto the dusty ground near the barn. His legs tangled and he fell again. Lulu dropped to her knees and scooped him up.
'You'll be okay,' she whispered, rubbing his fuzzy ears. Buckie closed his eyes and rested his head against her shoulder.
Buckie pushed up on his front knees. He tipped over. Tried again. Tips again. A fly buzzed past his ear.
On the fourth try, he stayed up for three whole seconds. Lulu laughed and held out a carrot stick.
Lulu sat in the barn with a bottle. Buckie nudged her arm until she offered it. He drank fast.
Milk dripped down his chin. She wiped his face with her sleeve. 'Good boy,' she said.
He licked her nose. Lulu giggled and hugged him close. He leaned into her chest and let out a soft moo.
Outside in the pasture, Buckie stood tall beside her. The golden light caught his shiny black coat. The windmill turned behind them.
Lulu rested her hand on his shoulder and he leaned into it. A warm breeze carried the smell of dry grass.
Buckie walked beside Lulu through the golden pasture. She patted his neck and he nudged her shoulder. The sun dipped low. They kept walking together, side by side.
