Captain Pickle Pants burst through the double doors of the pickle-shaped town hall. His rocket pack sputtered and his boots skidded across the square. The Great Pickle Jar was gone. Only a wet smear of brine remained on the stone pedestal.

He tapped his boots. Thrum — the rocket pack whined to life. Above him on a wrought-iron lamppost, a small chicken folded its wings and dropped down, landing with a soft cluck. It pecked thoughtfully at the empty pedestal, then looked up at the bearded man with bright beady eyes.

Zoom! Captain Pickle Pants lifted into the air. The rocket pack hissed and he rose above the rooftops, scanning the streets below. Below, the chicken fluttered up to a market stall and pecked at something tucked under a wooden bench — a trail of tiny paw prints leading away into the morning mist.

The bearded man landed softly among the market stalls. He spotted the silver ticket near the bench and snatched it up. The crinkle of it in his pocket was the loudest sound in the quiet morning. He folded it carefully and looked toward the outskirts.

On the outskirts, a hill shaped exactly like a giant glass jar rose against the sky. Captain Pickle Pants crept toward a dark hollow beneath its root system. A chorus of squeaks echoed out, and dozens of field mice poured from the shadows — each one clutching a green pickle like a treasure.

He dropped to his knees and held out both empty hands. 'I can share,' he called softly. The mice froze mid-squeak, pickles hovering in their little paws. The chicken ruffled its feathers and let out a sharp knowing cluck, as if it had suspected this all along.

The chicken marched forward and pecked open a small wicker basket at its feet. Inside, row after row of glistening jarred pickles caught the sunlight. The bearded man watched as the mice crept forward one by one, their squeaks turning into happy little chitters.

The mice scrambled forward in a happy blur of whiskers and tiny feet. They took jars eagerly, chittering with delight. The bearded man reached into his coat and pulled out a small tin cup, pouring cider from a flask he kept for just such occasions.

By sundown, the town square table groaned under the weight of picnic plates, pickle jars, and cider glasses. Captain Pickle Pants sat shoulder to shoulder with the field mice, passing jars down the line with careful steady hands.

Captain Pickle Pants passed a jar to a wide-eyed mouse on his left and accepted another from one on his right. The chicken hopped onto the table and claimed a seat at the head, tail feathers puffed with satisfaction. Whiskers and all, everyone leaned in for the toast.

The chicken strutted across the table with the very last pickle held firmly in its beak. It dropped it neatly into Captain Pickle Pants' empty plate and gave a satisfied little crow. The bearded man laughed — a rich warm sound that echoed off the pickle-shaped walls.

Captain Pickle Pants raised his glass of cider high. Every field mouse raised a thimble of juice. The chicken tapped its beak against the nearest jar. Clink. Clink. Clink. Under the first stars of evening, the whole town — whiskers and all — celebrated together.
