Each evening, she adds layers of paste and paper, shaping the cone with her hands. Paint dries in streaks of brown and grey. She reads from her notes, memorizing the words about magma and pressure.
One night, she mixes vinegar and baking soda, then pours it into the crater. The volcano sputters, then crumbles into a pile of damp paper. She stares at the broken tower.
She picks up a shard of dried paste, turns it over in her fingers. Then she gathers the crumbs, smooths a fresh sheet of paper, and begins to layer again.
At the gymnasium science fair, rows of tables stretch across the polished floor. Judges with clipboards move between displays. Chiara stands behind her volcano, her hands clasped tight.
She pours the vinegar, waits, waits — and nothing happens. No fizz, no foam. A boy two tables over cheers as his lava explodes onto the floor. Her fingers press flat against the table, the paper beneath her palms rustling in the still air.

She walks back to her table and reaches for her certificate. The judge places a blue ribbon on the display board beside her volcano. He gives her a nod.
