Observation and self-expression

Daisy peeked over the wooden stall door. The pigs splashed loudly in the thick, wet mud outside. She hummed a quiet tune and scribbled in her notebook. But when the big barn door creaked open, she quickly shoved her notebook straight under a heavy pile of dry hay.

A rooster strutted past her with a loud, ringing crow. He proudly showed off a shiny green beetle he had just uncovered in the dust. Daisy tapped her hoof softly against the floorboards. She chewed on a mouthful of sweet clover, wishing she could read him her poem about glittery beetle shells.

Across the yard, the sheep played a messy game of tag. They baaed loudly and bounced right over the wooden fences. Daisy laughed aloud at the funny, cloudy shapes they made in the dust as she drew them. Suddenly, a sheep skidded to a halt right next to her, and she slammed her book shut with a loud smack.

A sudden gust of wind swept right through the open barn with a loud whoosh. It snatched the notebook right off her crate! The pages fluttered through the air like frightened birds, landing smack in the middle of the feeding trough. The farmyard animals crowded around the strange paper, sniffing the edges and poking it.

Daisy stepped forward into the sunlight. Her hooves clicked sharply on the hard dirt as she picked up her open book. Taking a deep breath of the dusty, hay-scented air, she read her poem about the bright beetle and the bouncing sheep aloud. The entire noisy farmyard went completely silent.

The sheep stomped their hooves in a loud, happy applause. The rooster crowed, demanding to hear the poem about his shiny beetle one more time. Daisy smiled a wide, joyful smile and tapped her pencil against her chin. She flipped to a crisp, blank page and asked, "What story should we write next?"
