Daniela sprinted across the green grass. Her sneakers kicked up tufts of clover as she chased the bright yellow soccer ball. The ball bounced erratically toward a row of silent, gray park benches. She braced herself for a hard stop.
She slid on her knees, arms outstretched, but the ball stopped just short of her toes. It rested perfectly in the center of a chalk-drawn hopscotch grid. A sudden gust of wind whistled through the nearby oak trees. Daniela stared at the stationary ball, unsure if it moved on its own.
She tapped the ball gently with her toe; it didn't roll away but instead vibrated with a low, humming buzz that rattled her shoelaces. The hum grew louder, syncing with the rhythmic chirping of crickets hidden in the tall grass blades near her feet. Daniela leaned closer, curiosity overriding her fear.
Suddenly, the ball leaps into the air, spinning rapidly like a tiny helicopter blade, lifting Daniela’s hand off the ground with it. She grabs the laces to steady herself, feeling the rough texture of the leather against her palms as the ball hovers steadily. With a surprised laugh, she lets go, watching the ball float upward toward the blue sky.
Daniela jumps up and down, clapping her hands in delight as the ball descends slowly, landing softly back at her feet without a sound. She kicks it high into the air again, listening to the crisp thwack of contact echoing against the open space. She runs after it, smiling broadly, ready for another game.
