courage against fear

David climbed the hill behind Bethlehem. He pulled his sling from his belt. A voice boomed across the valley—Goliath!

It sounded like thunder rolling over stone. David gripped the leather and stared at the giant down below.

The giant stomped his spear into the ground—Boom. He shouted his challenge again. David threw a stone at a bush; it hit a leaf and the leaf fell off.

His fingers tightened around the remaining stones. David walked toward the valley floor. Sheep bleated behind him and followed.

The giant's shadow grew taller with every step. 'Who are you?' David asked. The giant laughed and covered his eyes with one hand, then the other.

David lifted his sling high above his head and whirled it—whirr whirr—like a spinning top made of leather and wind.

He let go. The stone flew. It hit the giant's helmet with a sound like a bell being struck by a spoon. The giant wobbled, then tipped over sideways with a crash that sent dust puffing into the air.

David stood alone in the silence, holding his empty sling. He walked back up the hill. One lamb licked the dust off his boot.
