Barkington bakery glows gold in the morning sun. The display window is full — right up until a shadow slips past.
Dot bursts through the bakery door. Only crumbs remain on the counter — and a tiny paw print. She sniffs the air. One quick tail-wag.
Dot trots through Barkington — past the post office, past the pond — following a sticky purple trail to the edge of the woods.
The trail leads to a hollow log. A raccoon sits inside, carefully eating the last piece of berry tart. It freezes when it sees the dog's nose twitch.
The crumb falls. The raccoon's ears droop. It looks at its empty paws.
Dot takes a slow breath. She walks over, breaks her sandwich in half, and nudges the bigger piece toward the raccoon.
The raccoon stares. Then a soft smile spreads across its face. 'You'd share?' it whispers.
Weeks later, Barkington's bake sale hums with activity. Every table overflows with treats and every animal is chatting.
At the front table, the raccoon stands beside the detective dog, proudly waving a tray of blueberry muffins.
The village smells like warm berries and friendship. Dot lets out a happy little bark.
