Digger Doug hummed as he leveled a fresh stretch of road, the gravel crunching under his bucket. The sun was warm on his metal sides.
But then the sky turned gray. Rain hammered the site, and water rushed across the new road like a river.
The next morning, every vehicle was stranded. The train sat on a rocky island, the airplane on high ground by the hangar, the dump truck and car on separate mudbanks — all surrounded by brown, swirling water.
Digger Doug revved his engine and pointed toward the ridge that might connect everything. But the water was too deep, and the current too strong.
The train honked sadly. The airplane flapped its wings in frustration. Digger Doug's bucket dropped to the mud.
Digger Doug had an idea. He called everyone together.
The train pushed a fallen beam to make a bridge. The dump truck piled gravel to raise the ridge.
The car and helicopter guided each vehicle across. The airplane dropped a tow rope from the hangar roof to pull the dump truck free.
Digger Doug led the way across the newly cleared path, the morning sun glinting off wet metal.
Every vehicle followed safely home. Digger Doug gave a long, happy honk as the road gleamed under his freshly packed gravel.
