Love, gratitude, and family bonds

Elian stood on his little chair at the kitchen counter. Three cookbooks thumped onto the floury table. The pages fluttered open like startled birds.

He pulled a pen from his pocket and wrote on a scrap of paper: bread, stew, cake, pie. One page turned into two, two into three—he couldn't pick just one.

First came the flour—measured, sifted, poured with fierce concentration. Then the stirring. His forearm burned by the time he slid the tray into the oven.

The timer buzzed like an angry wasp. Elian lifted the lid—and stared. A black puck stared back. The cakes were ruined.

He dragged a chair over and climbed onto the top shelf of the pantry. His fingers brushed past old jars of rice and pasta—then something cool and tinny.

He pulled the blue tin free and pried off the lid. Inside, a stack of recipe cards tied with a faded red ribbon waited in the dark.

He untied the ribbon with trembling fingers and unfolded the top card. The handwriting was wild and looping, the ink smudged in one corner as if water had fallen on it long ago.

At the bottom, in smaller letters, it read: One extra pinch of love. Elian traced the words with his fingertip. He thought his grandmother must have written this.

That afternoon, he climbed down from the pantry and found her in the kitchen. He took her hand—the one with the flour-dusted apron—and led her to the counter.

They stood side by side at the counter. She guided his grandmother's calloused fingers over the flour, showing him where to press, where to fold.

The kitchen filled with the smell of rising dough and butter. They baked in comfortable silence, the kind that doesn't need words. When the timer buzzed, they both reached for it at the same time.

When Grandma took the first bite, she closed her eyes and nodded slowly. Then she opened them and looked at Elian. She took his floury hand in both of hers.
