Emma stands at the center of the chalk-drawn court, holding a basketball that feels slick with sweat. She takes a deep breath, smelling the sharp scent of rubber and dry grass underfoot. The whistle blows, signaling the start of the game.
Emma dribbles forward but bumps into Leo’s shin guard; the ball bounces high and wild. She winces, hearing the loud thwack against the fence, and watches the ball roll toward the bushes. 'My turn,' she calls out, resetting her stance.
Emma tries to pass to Mia, but the ball slips from her sticky fingers and hits the ground with a dull thud. Frustration makes her shoulders slump as she hears the other kids giggling nearby. She picks up the ball, noticing how warm it is in her hands.
Emma stops trying to be the hero and taps the ball gently toward Sam, who is open near the hoop. Sam catches it with a surprised 'Whoa!' and shoots; the net swishes with a satisfying swish. Emma claps her hands, feeling the vibration travel up her arms.
The final bell rings, echoing across the playground where dust motes dance in the afternoon sun. Emma links arms with her teammates, their jerseys stained with green grass stains. They walk off together, laughing about the messy, perfect game.
