Fabrizio kicked his scuffed orange ball against the chain-link fence. Once. Twice. Three times. It always came right back.
Three friends appeared at the fence. Mateo, Priya, and Sam passed the ball in a steady rhythm. Click. Click. Click.
"Big match tomorrow," Mateo said. The ball bounced off a pinecone and sprayed pebbles everywhere. They laughed and reset.
Match day arrived. The field was painted with fresh white chalk lines. The other team wore bright orange jerseys.
The whistle blew sharp and loud. The orange team stole the ball on Fabrizio's first pass. He chased it down the sideline.
The orange striker weaved past him and scored. The scoreboard glowed red. 1–0.
Fabrizio sprinted back. His jersey was soaked through. The striker wound up for another shot. Fabrizio dropped to his knees and stretched his arms out.
The ball hit the post with a thunderous BOOM. It bounced straight up and rolled slowly into the empty net.
His friends erupted. The referee pointed to center field. The goal counted. Overtime went to penalties.
Fabrizio's kick sailed high over the keeper's head. Top corner. Game over.
They piled on top of him. Arms and legs and muddy jerseys tangled together. They laughed until they could barely catch their breath.
Later, the streetlights clicked on one by one. Fabrizio walked home with his scuffed ball under his arm. Behind him, the field glowed silver in the dark.
