Joy in trying new challenges

Fernando raced past the bright banners and painted fences of the outdoor sports center. He skidded to a stop beside the skate area, sending a little fan of dust across the concrete. Skateboards rattled in their rack. Fernando grabbed one and shouted, “I’ll try!”

The board rolled straight for three feet, then wobbled into a wild zigzag. Rattle-rattle! Its wheels skipped over cracks while Fernando stretched both arms and chased his balance. The next ramp waited ahead, bright and steep. He thought, “Keep going.”

Fernando practiced pushing, balancing, and stopping beside the low bench. On the next try, the skateboard shot away and spun underneath it. He crouched to retrieve the board, brushed dusty wheels with his sleeve, and grinned at the scrape marks. Then he pointed toward the horse-riding course.

At the riding course, Fernando climbed onto a horse and copied the instructor’s steps from the posted diagram. The horse suddenly trotted toward a pile of bright orange cones. Clatter! Three cones tumbled like toy hats. Fernando laughed, steadied the reins, and guided the horse around the course.

Fernando entered the football field with a ball tucked against his hip. He planted one foot and kicked. Thump! The ball bounced off the goalpost and rolled toward the riding course. Fernando sprinted after it, shouting, “Not so fast!”

The runaway ball rolled past the fence and between two hoofprints. Fernando reached it first and stopped it with one firm foot. Hoofbeats thudded nearby while cheers floated from the field. He nudged the ball back toward the goal, ready for another kick.

Fernando returned to the skate area and pushed again. This time, the board rolled in a straighter line before wobbling near the rail. He stepped off, laughed at his crooked path, and climbed back on. Scrape, bump, push—each sound became part of practice.

At the riding course, Fernando kept the reins calm and guided the horse between the cones. One cone rocked but stayed upright. He paused, corrected the turn, and tried the corner once more. Across the fence, the football field waited with its ball and bright white lines.

Fernando crossed to the football field for another kick. He swung carefully, sending the ball low and straight between the goalposts. The net gave a soft whoosh. Fernando jogged after the rolling ball, already choosing the next challenge.

Fernando moved from sport to sport as the afternoon light turned gold. He still tumbled, wobbled, and missed sometimes. Yet every mistake brought another push, another careful turn, another strong kick. Laughter, wheels, hoofbeats, and bouncing balls filled the sports center while Fernando kept moving.
