Finn paused on the sidewalk. Two green eyes blinked at him from behind a bush. A tiny gray cat was shivering inside.
The sandwich slipped from his hand. It landed with a soft pat in the grass. Oh.
Finn crouched down and reached out slowly. The cat pressed deeper into the shadows. Its tail wrapped tight around its paws.
Finn tapped his fingers on his knee. He thought about that for a moment.
He broke off a small piece of bread. He held it flat on his palm and waited.
The cat crept forward one paw at a time. It sniffed the bread and took a tiny bite.
The cat swallowed and looked up at Finn. Those bright green eyes met his.
"You can stay here," Finn whispered. The cat purred against his ankle all afternoon.
