Finnley the polar bear cub bundled into his red scarf and stomped out into the snow on Christmas Eve.
He spotted a shimmering blue feather drifting down and reached for it with both paws. The wind lifted it higher, and Finnley tumbled backward into a soft drift.
Finnley plucked himself from the snow and kept marching. He found a perfect pinecone, but the fox picked it up and trotted away.
He gathered three shiny ice shards, but they melted in his paws and puddled into the snow.
Finnley arrived at the edge of the village empty-pawed and looked down at his scuffed boots.
Bells rang and laughter drifted from the village. Finnley stood very still in the snow. He thought... maybe he had nothing to bring after all.
The North Star above Finnley pulsed once, bright and blue, then dropped a single thread of light into his fur.
His white paws began to glow gold, and when he shook them, warm sparkles burst into the air like fireflies. Finnley gasped and opened his mouth wide as a sparkle landed on his nose and tickled.
The sparkles drifted down through the village. The fox stopped running and batted one out of the air with its paw.
Finnley's friends emerged from their homes, laughing and reaching for the floating golden light.
The whole village glowed — not just from the windows, but from the sparkles settling on roofs, trees, and little snowy paths.
Finnley the polar bear cub sat on his friends' doorstep, warm and smiling, and watched the North Star wink above.
