Finn pushed through the wildflowers and gasped. There, in the middle of the bloom, sat a basket full of purple berries.
He dragged the basket under the big oak and curled his tail around it like a furry blanket.
Finn popped a berry into his mouth. Crunch. Then he heard a tiny sniffle behind a toadstool.
He peeked over the rim. A rabbit sat with droopy ears, and her belly gave a tiny rumble.
Finn stuffed another berry into his mouth and chewed fast. But the rabbit's sad eyes followed him.
When the squirrel and hedgehog appeared, Finn hid the basket behind his back. The squirrel's tail drooped. The hedgehog sighed.
Finn took a big bite. Then another. It didn't taste as good anymore.
Finn set the basket down in the grass. He picked up a berry and held it toward the rabbit.
The squirrel leaped onto a root. The hedgehog rolled a little closer. Finn popped a berry in his mouth — his eyes went wide.
Finn passed the basket around. Every paw and nose got a berry.
The rabbit giggled. The squirrel did a wiggle-dance. The hedgehog hummed a tiny tune.
Finn sat back against the oak with a berry-stained chin. The berries on his tongue tasted sweeter than any he ever ate alone.
