Morning sunlight sparkled across the quiet lake. Pip swung the fishing rod, and the hook plopped into the rippling water.
“Got one!” Pip whispered. A bright splash sprang beside the reeds, surprising Pip and Dad.
Pip held the rod very still. A dragonfly landed on the yellow bobber, making it wobble.
No fish bit. Pip kicked a pebble and watched it skip, skip, skip across the lake.
Dad told a story about fishing when he was little. Pip listened beside him while leaves rustled overhead.
Pip pointed above the trees. “That cloud looks like a duck!” The fishing line stayed still.
Pip began to reel in the line. Dad gently stopped the hand. “Let’s give the fish time.”
Pip lowered the rod and counted the ripples. “One, two, three—PLOP!” The bobber disappeared.
Pip and Dad pulled together. A little fish flashed silver in the sunlight.
Pip bent close, then gently lowered the fish back. Its tail flicked. Pip and Dad cheered together.
