Stanley chased the bright yellow tennis ball across the sun-drenched grass. His flat, pancake-like body slid straight past the toy, unable to find traction on the smooth blades.
He skidded to a halt at the tree line, ears drooping low. He watched David, round and bouncy like a beanbag chair, retrieve the toy with effortless ease.
Stanley tried to run again, pushing hard with his paws. But his sleek form lacked the grip to turn quickly on the smooth pavement nearby.
David bounced over, his wide belly jiggling with every step. He nudged Stanley’s shoulder with a soft, warm nose. 'You’re built for speed,' David said, tail wagging a steady rhythm against the air.
They took turns fetching: Stanley zoomed in a blur while David rolled with powerful momentum. Their different shapes created a perfect dance of motion across the park.
The sun dipped lower, casting long shadows as they lay side by side. Stanley flat and David round, both panting happily in the cooling breeze.
Stanley rested his chin on his paws, watching David stretch out comfortably beside him. He felt a deep sense of rightness in their contrasting silhouettes.
A gentle breeze rustled the leaves above them, carrying the scent of cut grass. Stanley closed his eyes, content in the quiet companionship of his unique friend.
