Ginger clung to the tortoise's broad back as it plodded through the ferns. Its claws clicked on stones. The tortoise let out a soft rumbling laugh. "We're almost there," Ginger whispered.

A wide slick stone blocked the path. The tortoise's legs scrabbled and slid. Ginger's fingers tightened on the rough shell. It felt cold under his palms.

They circled around to a narrower trail. The ferns parted, and the air grew warmer. Ginger rested his chin on the shell. "We'll find it," he thought.

A shallow stream crossed their way. The tortoise waded in, water splashing around its legs. Suddenly a bright blue frog leaped onto the shell. It let out a loud croak!

Ginger blinked, then grinned, his tongue poking out. The tortoise chuckled. They continued until the trees began to thin.

They reached the water's edge. The tortoise lowered its head slowly, bringing its broad shell within reach. Ginger scrambled up, his fingers brushing the smooth patterned shell.

He patted the shell once, twice, three times. The tortoise let out a happy little snort. The water lapped against the shore. "This is the spot," Ginger whispered.

The tortoise settled into the quiet shade beneath the trees. Ginger rested his head against its warm shell, listening to the slow steady breaths. A dragonfly hovered nearby. Ginger closed his eyes, and the world went still and peaceful.
