At dusk, Snuggles pressed his nose to the burrow window. “One star, two stars, three!”
A firefly blinked beside the glass. Snuggles jumped back. “Oh!”
Snuggles flopped onto his mossy bed and squeezed his eyes shut. The owl hooted, “Hoo-hoo!”
Pine branches whispered, swish, swish. Snuggles popped up. “One, two, three, four!”
Mama pointed outside. A fox curled beneath a fern, a rabbit tucked into grass, and a squirrel covered its nose with its tail.
“Good night,” whispered Snuggles. Then the fox gave a tiny snore. Snuggles giggled and sat wide awake.
Mama showed him the last star and pulled the blanket to his chin. Snuggles watched it twinkle.
“Fox… rabbit… squirrel…” Snuggles’s words slowed. A sleepy yawn opened his mouth like a little cave.
Snuggles’s paw dropped onto the soft blanket. He drifted beneath a sky full of twinkling stars.
Outside, the forest rested. Inside, Snuggles smiled as Mama whispered, “Good night.”
