Grandpa lifted Cal into his arms beneath the first flowering tree. A bright bird burst from the branches with a loud flap.
Cal pointed up. “Again!” he said, and Grandpa carried him toward the next tree.
They stopped beside a rough trunk. Cal tapped the bark while leaves whispered overhead.
Between the green branches, Cal spotted a tiny nest. Two small beaks peeked over its edge.
A breeze shook the next tree. Petals sprinkled down and landed on Cal’s head.
Cal blinked and patted the petals. Grandpa laughed. “A petal hat!”
For one last look, Grandpa lifted Cal high. A hidden branch gave a sudden CRACK!
A round seed dropped into Cal’s palm. He squeezed Grandpa’s shirt and whispered, “The tree gave Cal a gift.”
Grandpa carried Cal home beneath the sunny leaves. Cal held the seed carefully in both hands.
Birds chirped overhead, and petals trailed behind them. Tomorrow, Cal would walk the trees again with Grandpa.
