Granny Rose settled onto the sun-warmed garden bench and rested her patched canvas satchel beside her. Little Milo wandered up from the village square, his shoes dusty and his shoulders slumped.
He hovered near the bench, watching her hands trace the stitching on the satchel.
Granny Rose patted the bench. Milo just shrunk back and gripped the edge of his shirt. She opened the satchel and pulled out a book with a green dragon on the cover.
Milo glanced at it and turned away, still looking glum. She tucked the dragon back and pulled out another — a wooden boat sailing on a silver sea.
Milo shook his head and kicked at a pebble. She reached in again, her fingers brushing against something warm and humming softly beneath the other books.
Granny Rose pulled out a small, frayed storybook and flipped it open. Golden sparkles poured out like smoke and swirled around Milo's head.
The sparkles landed on his nose and in his hair. His eyes went wide as the sparkles formed a tiny glowing ship that sailed right off the page.
The glowing ship circled his thumb. Milo burst out laughing and reached into his own pocket, pulling out a smooth blue marble.
He placed it carefully on Granny Rose's open book, and the marble began to glow too. Granny Rose smiled and pulled him closer.
Together they watched the sparkles dance while Milo told her about his marble. "I found it at the beach," he said.
She listened as he told her all about it — the sea, the smooth stones, the long walk home. The sparkles settled around them like a blanket.
Granny Rose stayed on the bench a little longer, watching the last sparkles fade. Milo walked her home, his steps light and quick.
