Dad carried a big box into the living room. The box said Baby on the side.
Mom whispered, "It's for the little one." The toy truck slipped from Hailey's hand.
Mom opened a big book. She pointed to a tiny baby. "A baby is coming," she said.
Hailey looked at the baby in the book. Then she looked at her own small hands.
Hailey tried to climb onto their laps, but they were measuring a crib.
She marched to her room. She dragged the teddy bear to her high chair.
Hailey tugged Mom's sleeve and held out a tiny pink sock. "For the baby," she said.
Mom pulled Hailey into a big hug. She pressed a kiss to her forehead.
Hailey sat on the new baby blanket. She picked up the yellow rattle.
She showed the teddy bear how to hold the rattle. Then she hummed a soft song.
Hailey patted the blanket gently. Right where the baby would sleep.
Hailey smiled. She could not wait to meet the baby.
