Hassan pushed his scrambled eggs around his plate. Mom set out toast and orange slices. She watched him with a soft frown.
Hassan dragged himself to the playground. He sat on a bench and watched the other kids zoom past on bikes. A butterfly fluttered across the sun-warmed grass.
Hassan spotted a bowl of bright fruit on the counter. He grabbed a red apple with both hands. CRUNCH! His eyebrows shot up.
He munched through carrots and broccoli. Then he bolted back outside with a whoop.
Hassan marched into his classroom holding an orange. He offered a segment to his teacher. "Look — I have energy now."
The sweet citrus scent drifted across the room. The teacher took the orange segment and smiled.
The next morning, Hassan reached straight for the apple and a handful of grapes. His mom set the plate down.
Hassan grinned. He was already bouncing toward the door with his backpack on.
