Colorful toys crowded the rug, and open books made bright little tents across the floor. Beneath one storybook, Helya found a family photo. She studied every smiling face while the little clock ticked beside her. “I wish everyone were here,” she whispered.
Helya carried the photo toward the shelf, careful as a mouse with a crumb. Clack! A rolling wooden train bumped her ankle. The picture slipped, skated across the floor, and vanished beneath the bed. Helya stared at the dark gap and thought, “That photo needs rescuing.”
First came a ruler. Scritch, scritch. Then came a toy shovel. Scrape, scrape. Dust bunnies gathered like tiny clouds, but the photo stayed stubbornly out of reach. Helya stretched farther and thought, “Perhaps the train knows a better trick.”
Suddenly—whoosh! The wooden train rolled from beneath the bed with the photo draped over its cargo car like a tiny blanket. Helya burst into giggles. She lifted the rescued picture and gave the train a grateful pat. “You clever little engine,” she said.
Helya placed the photo beside her favorite toy on the shelf. Then she built a nest with cushions, a blanket, and three well-loved storybooks. The little lamp glowed above them. Helya thought, “This spot is ready for stories.”
Flicker. Flicker. The lamp went out. In the sudden dark, click—the photo frame tapped the shelf. Helya listened, then called toward the doorway, “Come share a story with me!” Her voice carried past the toys and into the hall.
Footsteps hurried closer. Family members filled the doorway and settled around the cushions. Helya held up the photo. “Tell us the story behind one smiling face,” she invited. The room brightened with lamps, voices, and the rustle of turning pages.
One story began with a rainy picnic. Another began with a lost kite. Laughter bounced off the shelves when Helya’s favorite toy became the official story-time microphone. Each person held it close, spoke dramatically, and passed it along. Helya listened with a bright grin.
At last, everyone leaned together for a new picture. The little camera blinked. Helya placed the fresh photo beside the old one and her favorite toy. From the doorway came one more burst of laughter. The books waited open, their pages shining in the lamplight.
Helya curled beneath the blanket while family voices drifted through the doorway. The favorite toy rested nearby, and the new picture shone beside it. One book stayed open on the rug. Helya watched the page flutter once, then closed her eyes as the story continued outside.
