Idaira tied the last knot on the saddle. She pulled the leather tight and smoothed her palms over the stitching. The stable smelled of hay and warm horses. Behind her, something shifted in the hayloft.
The horse sneezed — a loud, dramatic Sneeze! that shook the hay. Idaira jumped, then laughed and patted the horse's neck. The horse blinked slowly, as if nothing had happened at all.
Idaira drove the long trailer down winding roads. Mountains rose on both sides, green and steep. When the stadium lights appeared on the horizon, she smiled and shifted into a lower gear.
Inside the arena, the horse refused to step onto the metal ramp. Its ears pinned back and its tail swished hard. Idaira unclipped the lead rope and walked ahead, calling softly.
The horse followed, one careful hoof at a time. Left, right, left — each step measured and slow. Idaira kept her voice low and steady until they were both inside.
The first competition was in a city Idaira had never visited. During warm-up, another rider's horse bolted past the gates. Dust clouds rolled across the sand. Idaira kept her hands still on the reins.
Her horse snorted once, then stood perfectly calm. Idaira leaned into its ear and whispered, 'It's okay.' The horse flicked one ear toward her and blinked, steady and sure.
Idaira rode into the final round. The arena was packed. Her horse moved with confidence, clearing each fence with power and grace.
The last jump was wider than the others. Her horse hesitated at the edge, digging its front hooves into the sand. Idaira leaned forward and whispered a word.
The horse leaped — landing with a thud that shook the ground. Sand sprayed everywhere. Idaira stayed balanced, her eyes already looking ahead to the next stride.
Idaira walked her horse past the ribbon stand. The horse carried its head high, ears pricked forward. Idaira patted its neck once and thought: we did it.
Idaira pointed across the parking lot to the next arena. 'Tomorrow,' she thought. The horse lifted its head and flicked one ear, already listening for the next challenge.
