Ignacio wound up for a mighty kick, his muscles coiled tight. But the soccer ball slipped through his fingers and bounced away toward the empty bleachers. He chased it, his sneakers squeaking loudly on the polished wood of the stands.
The ball came to a rest right next to a small, trembling boy in a mismatched jersey. The little one looked down at his feet, shoulders hunched, afraid to meet anyone's eyes.
The boy kicked the ball back with a shy, tentative tap that rolled slowly across the grass. Ignacio caught it gently, noticing the boy’s scuffed cleats and wide, hopeful eyes staring at the goalpost.
He pointed to the open net, signaling for another try. The small boy nodded slightly, gripping the air as if holding an invisible ball, waiting for the signal to begin again.
Ignacio lined up for a perfect shot, aiming high and hard. He struck the ball with force, sending it soaring toward the upper corner of the net.
But the wind suddenly swirls the ball into a comical loop-de-loop over his own head. It bounced softly off his shoulder and landed at his feet instead of in the goal.
The small boy giggles, clapping his hands as the ball lands softly at his feet. Ignoring the laughter, Ignacio resets his stance, determined to finish the game properly.
Just as Ignacio prepares to strike again, the boy steps forward and taps the ball toward him with surprising skill. They smile at each other, ready to keep playing together under the bright sun.
