Courage through curiosity

Three sparkling specks skipped across the quiet sidewalk. John crouched beside the fence, watching each one flash like a tiny star. “Where are you going?” he whispered. The glittering trail slipped between the trees toward the woodland path.

The glitter led John beneath arching branches. He stepped over fern-fringed stones and passed a crooked sign furred with moss. Behind him, a twig snapped. John stopped and lifted a fallen branch. “Is someone there?” he asked. Only a woodpecker answered: tap, tap, tap.

The next glimmer curled beneath an old oak. Dry leaves hid something bright. John brushed them aside and uncovered a silver lantern. It flickered suddenly, throwing a dancing rabbit-shaped shadow across the trunk. John jumped back, then laughed and lifted the lantern by its handle.

John carried the lantern along the winding path. Golden light trembled over roots and ferns. “Who lost this?” he called. From beyond the oaks, a worried voice replied, “My lantern!” John hurried toward the sound, holding the handle carefully above the leaf-covered ground.

The path split beneath two whispering oaks. John reached the fork, but the sparkling clues vanished beneath two piles of leaves. The wind softened until every branch seemed to listen. He lowered the lantern and studied the trails. “Which way did you carry it?” he called.

A worried voice answered from the left trail, “This way!” John leaned closer. Beside the leaves, matching muddy footprints crossed the path in a neat line. He pointed the lantern toward them. “I found your trail,” he said, and followed the footprints beneath the oaks.

At the end of the footprints, an unseen owner reached for the lantern. John placed it into waiting hands. The golden glow spilled over the path as the owner hugged it close. “Thank you,” the voice said. John watched the light settle beneath the quiet trees.

John walked home beneath the quiet trees. The woodland path faded behind him, and the neighborhood lights blinked awake ahead. At the sidewalk, one new question sparkled near his shoe. John paused, bent toward it, and whispered, “Where are you going?”
