Joy sat on the couch, scrolling through her phone. The clock on the wall ticked. Tick. Tick. Tick. She sighed and dropped her phone onto the cushion beside her.
She spotted her blue headphones on the coffee table. Joy picked them up, pressed play, and the living room suddenly filled with a bouncy drum beat. Her foot started tapping. Tap. Tap. Tap.
Joy stood up. She hops to the left, then to the right. She spins in a circle and her sock slips on the wooden floor. Whoosh — she slides right into the couch and bounces back up, giggling.
The song changes and gets faster. Joy stomps like a dinosaur, taps like a raindrop, and claps overhead. She grabs a throw pillow and uses it as a microphone, singing way off-key at the ceiling fan.
Joy drops to her knees and drums on the couch cushions — bum-bum-tap, bum-bum-tap. The rhythm shakes the soft curtains, and they dance along with her. She can't stop smiling.
The music swelled and filled every corner of the room. The coffee table trembled. The clock on the wall seemed to tap along. Tick-tap. Tick-tap.
The song slowed. Joy sank back onto the couch, breathing hard. 'That was fun,' she thought.
She looked around the room. Everything felt different now. The curtains looked like they were swaying. The clock kept ticking, but it sounded like a beat.
