Milo raced along a leafy Adelaide street, gripping his blue kite. A gust lifted it high. “Just me and my boy!” Milo shouted.
The kite tugged harder, and Milo’s shoes left the ground. Down below, rooftops and gardens shrank as the sunny hills rolled toward the sea.
Milo grabbed a fence with both hands. His straw hat flew past his nose and landed in a rosebush.
Milo reached toward the rosebush, but the kite pulled him sideways. “Not my hat!” he called as the sea flashed below.
Milo wrapped the string around a broad tree trunk, then around a street sign. For one tiny moment, everything held still.
Snap! The string slipped free. The blue kite swooped over a neighbor’s roof, and Milo cupped his hands. “Come back, boy!”
The kite dove into a gum tree. Plop! Milo’s straw hat dropped neatly onto his head.
Milo laughed and ran downhill. The kite sailed ahead toward the seaside view, its yellow tail flicking in the breeze.
At last, Milo sat beneath the gum tree and held the string gently. The kite bobbed beside him in the warm breeze.
Milo smiled at his blue boy. “No tricks today,” he said. “Just me and you.”
